The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested seven suspects in connection with a highway robbery involving a member of the Council of State, which occurred along the Tamale-Buipe Highway in July 2025.

According to the Director-General of the CID, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the arrests followed months of intelligence-led investigations and targeted operations by the Police Anti-Armed Robbery Unit.

Man arrested in Bekwai over unlawful narcotic drug possession

“The police have arrested seven suspects in a highway robbery involving a Council of State member, which occurred sometime last year,” she said at a press briefing on January 29, 2026.

DCOP Donkor explained that on July 21, 2025, the victim was travelling along the Tamale-Buipe Highway when he was attacked by six armed men who stole several personal items.

“The victim was traveling along the Tamale-Buipe Highway when he was attacked by six armed men who robbed him of personal belongings, including mobile phones, some cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop, and other items,” she stated.

She said a major breakthrough in the case occurred on January 11, 2026, when intelligence gathered by the CID led to an operation in Salaga in the Savannah Region.

“Following intelligence gathered by the CID, a team from the anti-armed robbery units was dispatched to Salaga in the Savannah Region. This operation led to the arrest of Rashida Yussif, who was found in possession of an iPhone 7 Plus belonging to one of the victims. The phone was retrieved,” she indicated.

“Further investigations led officers to a mobile phone shop located at Dagomba Line in Salaga. The shop attendant, Aaron Abana Basuifanga, was arrested and disclosed that the phone had been brought to the shop by his uncle, Wilson Avasong, an environmental officer and the shop’s owner who resides in Tamale. Suspect Wilson Avasong was subsequently arrested in Tamale,” she continued.

Wilson Avasong, during interrogation, admitted purchasing the phone from a phone repairer, Muntaru Idrisu, also known as Virgin, for GH¢1,000. Police later arrested Muntaru Idrisu at Tamale Aboabo Market, where he led officers to Aminu Zebrila, also known as Birdman, a 35-year-old Okada rider operating in Dungu, a suburb of Tamale.

DCOP Donkor added that a search of Aminu Zebrila’s room uncovered a cache of weapons and items believed to be linked to multiple robbery incidents.

“A search conducted in the room of suspect Aminu Zebrila resulted in the retrieval of several items, including a locally manufactured shotgun, one locally manufactured pistol, four live BB cartridges, one locally manufactured sword with the inscription ‘Breadman,’ one live 5.56x44CZ ammunition, two live revolver ammunition rounds, one face mask, one jackknife, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, one talisman, one cutter, one catapult, 15 assorted mobile phones, one jungle motorbike, 17 assorted wristwatches, five pen drives, one Telecel SIM card, and three MTN cards, which were removed from phones snatched from victims during the robbery.”

Investigations further revealed that Aminu Zebrila is an ex-convict previously convicted of robbery in 2012.

Two additional accomplices, Inusa Sumaila, also known as Agenda (42), and Haruna Safiano (32), were later arrested from their hideouts behind the Tamale China Mall.

DCOP Lydia Donkor said investigations are ongoing to track down other suspects believed to be at large and to recover an additional weapon in the gang’s possession.

“Police investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects believed to be on the run and to retrieve a weapon believed to be in their possession,” she assured.
