The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected a request by Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Ayawaso East MP, Nasser Toure Mahama, to be vetted virtually ahead of the party’s parliamentary primaries.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on January 27, 2026, the NDC Deputy Director of Elections, Rashid Tanko Computer, confirmed that the FEC received the request but maintained its established rules.

Why the wife of late Ayawaso East MP requested virtual vetting

He said representatives of Hajia Amina had raised concerns, explaining that the late MP’s wife is in mourning and would prefer her vetting to be conducted online.

“Indeed, the party leadership received a request from the camp of Hajia Amina this afternoon (Tuesday) requesting a virtual vetting. The letter came, we discussed it thoroughly and we compared it to our previous activities and the performance of the party when it comes to matters of this nature,” Tanko stated.

He emphasised that the NDC has consistently required candidates to appear physically for vetting, except in cases where they are outside the country and face extreme difficulty in travelling.

He noted that the party has rejected similar requests in the past and operates under clearly defined ground rules.

“Our position has been very clear in matters of this nature. It is only a candidate who is outside this country and then finding it extremely difficult to come down to participate in vetting. So, it is only that one that we give that kind of reverence to, but all candidates in the country are denied such privilege of going through virtual vetting. We have never done it before,” he remarked.

Tanko further explained that granting Hajia Amina’s request could set an undesirable precedent for future aspirants.

“We don’t want to create another precedent that others can just rely on and say the Functional Executive has varied its decisions on matters of this nature, so therefore I can also apply for the opportunity to also do virtual vetting,” he added.

The NDC primaries have been slated for February 7, 2026, while the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will conduct the parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
