Disease fears mount at Walantu community over poorly-disposed Kasoa Polyclinic waste

The people of Walantu, a community located within the Central Business Area of Kasoa, have raised an important concern over a potential outbreak of infectious diseases, which they attribute to poor waste management practices at the Kasoa Polyclinic.

According to some residents, liquid waste from the health facility has been flowing through the community for several years without proper channeling or treatment, creating an unhealthy living environment for them.

They insist that despite numerous complaints lodged with the management of the polyclinic, no meaningful action has been taken to address the problem.

The situation is said to have worsened over time, with residents alleging that human waste, including excrement, is sometimes discharged into open areas, a practice they say has previously resulted in heated confrontations between community members and hospital staff.

Speaking to Citi News, a local opinion leader, Francis Gasu, described the situation as a grave public health threat that continues to endanger lives in the area.

“It’s a big problem. It’s a big threat to all of us,” he stated.

Gasu noted that the issue is not new, adding that residents have endured the situation for more than a decade.

2025 in Review: Major disease outbreaks reported across Ghana

“This isn’t new; we’ve been dealing with this terrible situation for over 10 years. Often, the hospital staff pump out their waste, especially when it looks like it’s about to rain, whether day or night,” he said

He further lamented the unbearable conditions residents are forced to live with on a daily basis.

“The whole area is engulfed in a terrible stench. We’ve complained to hospital administrators many times, but nothing changes because they are not the ones affected,” he added.

Gasu has, therefore, appealed to the Environmental Health Department of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly to urgently intervene.

“Every day, we live with the risk of a major outbreak of communicable diseases,” he warned, urging authorities to compel the management of the Kasoa Polyclinic to immediately address the health hazards confronting the community.
