Ball boys from Morocco seized towels of some goalkeepers Ball boys from Morocco seized towels of some goalkeepers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has moved to clarify the storm surrounding Morocco’s ball boys after dramatic scenes involving goalkeepers’ towels at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In both the semi-final against Nigeria and the final against Senegal, Moroccan ball boys were seen removing towels placed near the goalposts by opposition goalkeepers, first Stanley Nwabali during Nigeria’s penalty shootout defeat, and later Senegal’s Edouard Mendy in the final.

The actions sparked unrest among fans, with many calling for disciplinary action and accusing the hosts of gamesmanship. But CAF’s Referees’ Committee president, Olivier Safari Kabene, has now delivered a decisive stance, and it backs the removal of the towels.

Speaking to Canal+ Sport Afrique, Safari made it clear that towels are not recognized as part of a player’s official equipment under the Laws of the Game.

“It is very simple. The field of play must remain clear of any foreign objects that are not part of the players’ equipment. A towel is not a jersey, not shorts, and not gloves,” he explained.

According to Safari, towels placed inside the net, on the goalposts, or near the goal line can influence matches. He cited concerns ranging from distraction of opponents and obstruction of the referee’s view, to possible interference with the ball in critical moments.

“When a goalkeeper places a towel inside the side netting or right next to the post, it can influence the game. It can distract opponents, obscure the referee’s view of the goal line, or even interfere with the ball in certain situations,” he added.

Despite public pressure, Morocco’s ball boys will not face punishment. CAF considers their actions justified under the regulations, drawing a firm line against what it describes as potential physical or psychological influence on the game.
