Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has explained that his decision to contest the Ayawaso East National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary is motivated by a desire to serve his people, rather than personal or material gain.

Speaking to the media after filing his nomination, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the former he appealed to delegates to assess his experience, track record and capacity to deliver meaningful development to the constituency.

I don’t see why I should resign’ – Baba Jamal on NDC primary bid

“To those who keep asking why Baba Jamal is leaving Nigeria as High Commissioner to come and seek the title of Honourable, let me be clear, my motivation is service and not materialism. It is humanism and service to the people,” Baba Jamal said.

According to Baba Jamal, while he holds his current position in high regard, he believes his contribution would be more impactful if he served directly in Parliament.

“I believe that my service here will be more useful to my people and to the nation than my service in Nigeria, not because I do not value my position there. When duty calls where you are needed more, you must respond,” he stated.

Baba Jamal is among six aspirants who have picked nomination forms to contest the primary ahead of the March 3 by-election.

The by-election was triggered by the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
