The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has launched the Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund, a landmark initiative aimed at expanding access to education for brilliant but needy students, particularly within the Gonja Kingdom and surrounding communities.

The launch ceremony, held in Accra on January 24, 2026, also marked the inauguration of the Fund’s Board of Trustees, a move intended to ensure strong governance, transparency, accountability and the long-term sustainability of the initiative.

The Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund is designed to empower young people with relevant knowledge and skills, create lasting educational opportunities and support human capital development and socio-economic progress in the Savannah Region and beyond.

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, who represented government appointees particularly those from the Savannah Region commended the initiative and reaffirmed government’s commitment to education-led development.

He stressed that sound governance, transparency and accountability are critical to sustaining public trust and ensuring that resources reach intended beneficiaries.

“The support you receive is not only an opportunity but also a responsibility. You must use it wisely, pursue excellence, uphold integrity and commit yourselves to contributing positively to your communities and our nation,” Dr Jinapor said.

He congratulated the founders, Board of Trustees and partners of the Fund and wished the initiative success in promoting equity and supporting Ghana’s long-term development.

Dr Jinapor also conveyed a message from President John Dramani Mahama, explaining that the President was unable to attend due to an international assignment in Davos. He noted that the strong presence of government appointees from the Savannah Region demonstrated the President’s support for the initiative.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak described the launch as both symbolic and substantive, noting that it reflects compassion, foresight and civic responsibility.

He emphasised that education remains the foundation upon which all sectors of the economy rise or fall and acknowledged government policies such as Free SHS, free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, and reforms in scholarship administration.

“While government continues to lead with policy, legislation and funding, the strongest nations are built when public commitment is reinforced by private conscience,” Dr Apaak stated.

He added that the Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund complements government efforts, fills critical gaps and directly touches lives where support is most needed.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, described the Fund as timely and commendable, stressing the strong link between human capital development and economic stability.

According to him, investing in education strengthens productivity, innovation, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and macroeconomic resilience.

“Education is not merely a social investment; it is an economic imperative,” Dr Asiama noted.

He further praised the establishment of a Board of Trustees, saying strong governance is essential to sustaining public confidence and ensuring the Fund achieves its objectives.

Speakers at the event urged beneficiaries to view the support not as an entitlement but as a trust placed in their potential and discipline, encouraging them to excel academically, lead ethically and give back to their communities.
