AASUP, GoldBod to explore sustainable mining collaborations

Accra, Jan. 23, GNA – The Association of African Sustainability Practitioners (AASUP) has held a high-level meeting with the Ghana GoldBod to discuss potential collaborations aimed at strengthening sustainable mining practices.

Hosted at the GoldBod headquarters in Accra, the discussions focused on opportunities for capacity building in sustainable mining, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, and related training programmes.

The meeting saw AASUP represented by its President, Mr Humphrey Tetteh, Mrs Sakina Twumasi, the Executive Secretary, and Dr Peter Nyano, Co-founder of AASUP who represented the Vice Chancellor of Accra Technical University.

AASUP highlighted how its training initiatives could strengthen GoldBod’s operational capacity and data collection across all departments.

GoldBod, established to de-risk the mining sector and align licensing with global standards, emphasised the importance of ESG, traceability, and sustainability issues.

The organisation has dedicated committees on ESG and Sustainability to ensure mining practices are aligned with global trends and local community development.

GoldBod’s delegation included Mr Richard Nunekpeku, Deputy Chief Eexecutive Officer, Professor Ishmael Quaicoe, Director of Responsible Mining and Sustainability, Dr Thomas Agyei, ESG Manager, Mrs Linda Asamoah Boateng, Unit Head of Mining Operations, and Mr James German, Deputy Director of Mining Operations.

The partnership among AASUP, GoldBod, and the Accra Technical University (ATU) is expected to significantly advance sustainable mining practices, support alternative livelihoods, and ensure the mining industry in Ghana meets international best practices.

AASUP is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to supporting a knowledge-based green transition across Africa, with a focus on renewable energy, sustainable development, and environmental stewardship.

The Association has members from diverse sectors, including government agencies, corporate institutions, professional bodies, service providers, individual professionals and students who have come together to promote sustainability practices across the continent.
