NPP flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, threatened to halt the party’s peace pact ceremony held on Thursday at the Alisa Hotel, after he openly protested a clause in the document moments before the candidates were to sign.

The peace pact, organized by the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee, was designed to secure a firm commitment from all aspirants to maintain calm and respect the outcome of the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

Eyewitnesses at the event said Kennedy Agyapong appeared moody throughout the programme. But tensions peaked when copies of the agreement were distributed to the candidates for endorsement.

In a dramatic outburst that left many in the room stunned, Kennedy Agyepong reportedly shouted: “I won’t sign this document if this clause is not taken out!”—drawing murmurs across the hall, where former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman (Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders), and the other flagbearer aspirants were present and signing.

Attempts by the party’s Director of Finance and Administration, Dr Yamoah, to calm the situation reportedly failed. Even interventions from fellow aspirants, including Dr Bryan Acheampong, could not immediately persuade Kennedy Agyapong to sign.

It took the direct intervention of the Chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee, Joe Osei-Owusu, to resolve the impasse, before Kennedy Agyepong finally appended his signature, bringing the ceremony back on track after a tense few minutes.

All the party’s presidential aspirants were in attendance, including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Ing Kwabena Agyepong, Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kennedy Agyapong.

Also present were the NPP’s 2024 vice-presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and Frank Davies, Chairman of the party’s Legal Committee.

Despite the disruption, the event ended successfully, with all aspirants ultimately committing to a peaceful process and a united front after the winner was declared.
