New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has, for the first time, publicly commented on the troubles of his cousin, former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Ofori-Atta has been detained by the United States immigration authorities over some legal matters.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, Gabby, after initially refusing to answer any question on Ofori-Atta, passed comments on the former minister.

Asked what Ken thought of claims that he was responsible for the “unpopular decisions” on Ghana’s economy during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Gabby said, “I haven’t seen him for a while, so I don’t know.”

He added that; “I will keep my feelings to myself,” after he was asked what he thought of assertions that Ken was solely responsible for the “unpopular decisions.”

On Ofori-Atta’s detention, Gabby said that his cousin is a strong man, adding that his faith would see him through the challenges he is going through.

“He is a very strong man mentally, so I’m sure he is doing well,” he retorted to a question on pictures of Ofori-Atta’s virtual appearance before a US immigration court from his detention centre, while spotting a black jumpsuit.

The host of the programme, Serwaa Amihere, also asked Gabby about the supposed conversation he is reported to have had with Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, where he is reported to have said that Ken is afraid of returning to Ghana because of how he would be treated.

He retorted; “I don’t discuss private conversations publicly, so I don’t wish to discuss it,” without confirming whether the said conversation was held.

Gabby went on to give the assurance that Ken Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana.

“I believe Ken would come to Ghana, and I know he wants to come to Ghana,” he said.
