Former Member of Parliament for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, has opened up about his defeat in the 2024 elections, admitting that it remains difficult for him to explain why he was not re-elected for a second term.

Amewu, who also served as Minister of Railways Development, was widely seen as a strong candidate ahead of the 2024 polls.

Political research and surveys conducted before the election suggested he had a solid chance of retaining the seat.

However, the outcome proved otherwise.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Joy News on Monday, January 19, 2026, Amewu stated that, despite the projections, the final decision rested with the electorate, who may have sought change.

“It will be extremely difficult to understand why I was not repeated because everybody knew; throughout Ghana, all the research that was done clearly indicated that the people of Hohoe were going to vote.

“But in the minds of the electorates, they may see something quite different in the other candidate that I may not have, and maybe that is why they want to try a different candidate, so I was booted out,” Amewu said.
