Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr KK Sarpong, has indicated his willingness to serve in President John Dramani Mahama’s administration if invited.

He stressed that public service should be driven by competence rather than political affiliation.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on January 20, 2026, Dr Sarpong said he would readily accept an advisory role similar to the Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy (PAGE) if he believes his expertise would be useful.

“Why not? If I believe I have the expertise, why not? I will accept an advisory role similar to the Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy,” he stated.

Dr Sarpong was among several professionals invited to contribute ideas at the 2025 National Economic Dialogue, which brought together economists and policy experts to offer recommendations on Ghana’s economic direction.

He explained that his participation in the dialogue, despite his association with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), was motivated by the national interest.

Asked whether his involvement amounted to disloyalty to the NPP, Dr Sarpong dismissed the suggestion, describing it as misguided.

“They should be crazy. What is the essence of education? It should help us bring development to our people. This is a new government that wants to understand the dynamics and invites experts to come,” he said.

He added that he was not the only individual from the opposition who took part in the dialogue.

“I was glad I was invited, even though I belong to the other side. It wasn’t just me alone; people came from the NPP stock as well,” he noted.

Dr Sarpong’s remarks add to growing calls for a more inclusive, expertise-driven approach to governance as the Mahama administration works to shape its economic agenda.
