Bryan Acheampong warns of permanent NPP split if Bawumia or Ken wins 2028 ticket

In a blunt and provocative assessment of the internal health of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong has warned that the party faces a terminal fracture if it elects either Dr Mahamudu Bawumia or Kennedy Agyapong as its candidate for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking to a charged crowd of delegates in the Obom, Amasaman, and Trobu constituencies on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Dr. Acheampong positioned himself as the only healing candidate capable of preventing a total implosion.

His remarks capped a two-day ‘Unity Tour’ of the Greater Accra Region, ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Dr. Acheampong’s core argument is that the rivalry between the Bawumia Camp and the Ken Agyapong Camp has become so toxic that neither side will support the other in a general election.

He questioned the delegates on the practicalities of reconciliation if either of the frontrunners emerges victorious.

“I have this question for you all, and it is because we are all seeking power. Who among you here believes that if Kennedy Agyapong wins, Abronye DC and the supporters of Dr. Bawumia would support him for us to win power?” he asked.

He then flipped the scenario, suggesting a Dr Bawumia victory would be equally divisive: “What about when the situation is vice versa in the case of Dr. Bawumia? I am the only one who can unify this party for victory in 2028.”

“You all know that if we push these two [Dr Bawumia or Ken], we will struggle to win power. Present me; let me win that power for our party,” he insisted.

Dr. Acheampong did not mince words regarding the party’s loss in the last general election.

He revealed that the post-election “Thank You Tour” was marred by such petty fights that it had to be aborted.

“Remember, we lost the last election, and we were on our way for just a Thank You Tour. Even so, we were not able to complete it because of petty fights. Some people were dropped from the bus and were told that utterances from their mouths contributed to our loss,” he told the delegates.

This reference to “the bus” has become a potent symbol in the 2026 campaign, highlighting the deep-seated animosity between the various factions that have governed the party over the last eight years.
