The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has strongly condemned the violent assault that occurred at the Akoti Health Centre in the Assin Fosu District on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
The incident reportedly took place while health workers were providing emergency medical care. According to the facility’s official report, two injured individuals were brought to the centre from Assin Wurakese for treatment after sustaining injuries from an alleged assault. During treatment, the alleged assailant also visited the facility to seek medical attention.
A group of individuals then stormed the health facility, armed with offensive weapons, and violently attacked the alleged assailant in the presence of health workers, patients, and visitors. The attack caused panic, posed a serious threat to lives and property, and violated the sanctity of the health facility.
In response, the Ghana Police Service has been notified to promptly investigate the incident, apprehend all perpetrators, and enhance security at the Akoti Health Centre.
The Central Regional Health Directorate expressed concerns about the attack, emphasising that health facilities are neutral and protected spaces dedicated solely to preserving life.
The GHS in a statement dated Thursday, January 15, said, “The Central Regional Health Directorate strongly condemns all acts of violence within health facilities in the region. Health institutions are neutral and protected spaces dedicated solely to the preservation of life. Any attack on clients or health workers is unacceptable and undermines the safety, confidence, and effective functioning of the healthcare system.”
These measures, according to the GHS, aim to restore confidence among health workers and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential health services.
GHS assured the public of its commitment to the safety and well-being of health workers, patients, and visitors across the region.
GHS Management said it will continue collaborating with security agencies and stakeholders to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
It urged the public to support efforts to maintain peace and safety within all health facilities.
