Akandoh directs Pharmacy Council to overhaul licensing system

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed the Pharmacy Council to conduct an overhaul of the criteria for awarding pharmacy licenses as part of Ghana’s preparation toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC)

According to a post by the Ministry of Health on Thursday, January 15, Mr Akandoh, speaking at a two-day Expanded Stakeholders Retreat, explained that the previous licensing method, which prioritised the proximity of pharmacies to each other, no longer meets the country’s healthcare needs.

According to him, licensing should reflect population size to ensure fair access to medicines, especially in underserved communities.

He also added that the new approach will improve the distribution of pharmacies nationwide and strengthen Ghana’s push toward accessible healthcare for all.
