The Gambia Reparations Commission has begun disbursing payments to victims of human rights violations that occurred between July 1994 and January 2017.
Announcing the milestone on Monday, January 12, 2026, the Commission said the initiative is aimed at “facilitating justice, restoring dignity, and supporting the recovery of victims who endured violations during the specified period.”
Payments are being disbursed in phases, starting with victims whose violations occurred in 1994. The Commission is actively contacting eligible victims and victim groups to verify information and complete the necessary steps for disbursement.
Victims who have not yet registered or updated their details are urged to contact the Commission as soon as possible.
They are required to provide “a valid identification document, bank account or Wave details, and any supporting documentation from the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), where applicable,” the release said.
The Commission called on community members, civil society groups, and the public to “assist victims, particularly those in remote areas or with limited mobility, to complete their registration and verification processes.”
Chairperson Dr. Badara Loum reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment, saying: “We are unwavering in our mission to deliver transformative, transparent, and victim-centered reparations in accordance with our mandate.”
The Commission’s leadership team includes Vice Chairperson Isatou Ndow, Commissioners Abdou A. Manneh, Ebou Faye Njie, Safiatou Touray, Isatou (Ayesha) Jammeh, Dr. Babanding Daffel, and Executive Secretary Essa Coker.
