Late Ayawaso East MP was a diligent committee man — Parliament

Parliament has paid tribute to the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Hon. Naser Toure Mahama, describing him as a detail-oriented legislator whose influence was most strongly felt through committee work and policy scrutiny.

The tribute was delivered in the House by the First Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor.

Hon. Naser, who passed away on January 4, 2026, entered Parliament in January 2013 on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He won the Ayawaso East seat in four consecutive elections and had just commenced his fourth term at the time of his death.

Parliament described him as a diligent “committee man”, noting his extensive contributions to several key committees, including Energy; Roads and Transportation; the House Committee; and the Committee on Private Members’ Bills and Motions.

He also served as Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Mines and Energy, where his professional background in the oil and energy sector strengthened parliamentary oversight of petroleum regulation and licensing.

According to the tribute, Hon. Naser was known for meticulous preparation and a strong focus on value-for-money assessments during committee deliberations, frequently interrogating whether government contracts served the best interests of taxpayers.

On the floor of Parliament, his contributions were largely channelled through formal parliamentary questions rather than prolonged debate. These interventions often centred on drainage and flood control, health infrastructure, and hospital projects within the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Parliament cited his persistent follow-ups on the Ayawaso East Drainage Project, the upgrading of the Nima Government Clinic, and the proposed Agenda 111 district hospital as clear examples of his constituency-driven legislative approach.

The House further noted that Hon. Naser spoke sparingly during plenary sessions, preferring concise, focused, and issue-based contributions.

In its tribute, Parliament concluded that Hon. Naser Toure Mahama’s legacy lies in his quiet but consistent commitment to legislative scrutiny and constituency advocacy.
