Cameroon have written a new chapter in their Africa Cup of Nations history. The Indomitable Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 after a hard-fought 2–1 victory over South Africa, eliminating the Bafana Bafana for the first time at the tournament.
South Africa began the encounter brightly, pressing high and exploiting moments of defensive uncertainty from the Cameroonian backline. However, despite creating several clear opportunities, Hugo Broos’ men failed to capitalise on their dominance,, a miss that would later prove costly.
Cameroon gradually settled into the contest and struck first in the 34th minute. A deflected effort fell kindly to Junior Tchamadeu, who showed great composure to curl a precise finish beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, igniting celebrations among the Lions faithful.
Reflecting on the missed chances, South Africa head coach Hugo Broos admitted his side paid dearly. He said: “In the first half, we had three clear chances which we did not take, and we paid the bill with a lucky goal.”
The second half saw a transformed Cameroon side more confident, more aggressive, and more decisive. Just two minutes after the restart, Darlin Nagida delivered a delightful cross into the box, where Christian Kofane rose highest to power a brilliant header past Williams, doubling Cameroon’s advantage in the 47th minute.
South Africa responded late through Evidence Makgopa, pulling one back and setting up a tense finale. However, Cameroon’s discipline, experience, and resilience enabled them to hold firm until the final whistle, sealing a famous 2–1 victory.
Despite the disappointment, Broos acknowledged Cameroon’s quality. He said: “Cameroon plays with a big heart, fighting spirit and a lot of energy. They’re a tough opponent, and we saw that today.”
Baleba Shines as Pagou Praises Team Spirit
Midfield General Carlos Baleba delivered a commanding performance and was deservedly named Man of the Match. His statistics underlined his dominance: 100% aerial duels won (4/4); 2 out of 3 tackles won; 5 out of 6 ground duels won; Dribbled past zero times; 8 defensive contributions; 100% pass accuracy in his own half (18/18) and 10 out of 16 successful passes in the opposition half
Cameroon head coach David Pagou was quick to deflect individual praise, stressing collective strength. He said: “The star for us is the team. That has been the focus since we took over, and everyone has understood the word. Football is a collective sport.”
Pagou also paid tribute to his faith following the historic win: “The LORD is my guiding principle. He guides me, he inspires me.”
An Impressive Tournament Run
Cameroon’s qualification comes on the back of an impressive campaign so far:4 matches played; 3 victories; 1 draw; 6 goals scored and 3 goals conceded.
Next up for Cameroon is a daunting quarter-final encounter against tournament hosts Morocco, who secured their own place in the last eight thanks to Brahim Díaz’s lone goal in a narrow victory over Tanzania.
With confidence high, momentum building, and belief growing within the squad, the Indomitable Lions now set their sights on the Atlas Lions, determined to keep their AFCON 2025 dream alive.
