Businesses running away from Ghana due to ‘dumsor’, high cost of electricity – Buaben Asamoa

A campaign team member of Movement for Change, Lawyer Yaw Buaben Asamoa has opined that multinational companies are running away from Ghana because of persistent, irregular, and unpredictable electric power outages (dumsor).

Speaking to Adom FM on Monday, April 6, the former Director of Communications for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) said government must admit that ‘dumsor’ is here and is killing businesses.

“We are suffering and it’s not only individuals who are suffering. Businesses are also collapsing. Many businesses are running away from Ghana and they say one of the key things is dumsor. The small power they get too is very expensive. So dumsor is the policy that is killing us now.

“Things are tough and dumsor is the policy that the NPP and the NDC must talk about. You cannot do anything. The dumsor is there and the government must accept it. It’s what is killing what is remaining of the Ghanaian economy,” Lawyer Buaben Asamoah argued.

Several multinational companies including Societe Generale and Glovo have indicated they are exiting the Ghanaian market this year.

According to a notice issued by Glovo, the company will exit Ghana on Friday, May 10.

The company has explained that it is leaving because making a profit in Ghana has become difficult.

It said achieving profitability would require substantial investment over an extended period.

“Whilst we recognize the potential of the Ghana market, building a stronger position and achieving profitability would require substantial investment over an extended period. This is why we have decided to redirect our resources towards the other 23 countries where Glovo operates to better serve the millions of customers who use the Glovo app every day,” Glovo stated.
