Kofi Asare Suggests Alternative Way For Students Who Fail WASSCE

Mr Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Educational Watch (EduWatch), has suggested an alternative way for candidates who fails WASSCE. He is of the view that, a career pathway should be created for such students.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, 20th September 2022, he wrote that Every education system has an external assessment that grades attainment. Ours is the Pass or Perish culture surrounding WASSCE and its related fraud.

“We can create career pathways for those who do not ‘pass’ WASSCE enough to enter tertiary direct, and encourage post secondary CBT TVET in market led trades.” He added.

According to Kofi Asare, if a candidate scores at least E8 in all subjects, they should have access to pre-university distance programmes to improve and pursue:

Year 1: Certificate

Year 2-3: Diploma

Year 4-5: Degree

He is of the view that this will ensure WASSCE students who do not score F in their core or electives are not ‘wasted’ but supported to upgrade.

Background

Ghana National Council for Private Schools (GNACOPS) has called on the government to collapse the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The Council has argued that the examination body has outlived its aim and purpose and has no positive impact or contribution towards educational development in Ghana. Kofi Asare’s comments comes as a background to the above.
