Using Rwanda To Argue For More Women In Parliament Is Bogus – Sam George Illustrates

A Member of the Ghanaian Parliament has indicated that, citing Rwanda as an example to encourage more women in parliament is a sham.

On a morning show, MP for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, indicated that, when using Rwanda as an example to pressure the government of Ghana to have more women in parliament, he does not agree since the circumstances in Ghana and Rwanda are not the same.

For him, Rwanda had fewer men than women at the time they first had more female representatives in parliament. There were more women during their transition to a democratic country. A lot of men were wiped out and for that reason, women were the only choice.

To the MP, comparing the representation of Ghana with Rwanda is bogus. He indicated that, he as an individual has worked with lawmakers in Rwanda, and these women are still treated badly at home. Women, in top positions in such countries, are still abused domestically. Thus, the male still dominates their society and to him, this does not represent women empowerment. He described this as a sham.

Meanwhile, from our point of view, parliamentary representation should not necessarily be a representative platform. Gender should not be a critical criterion for representatives of a community. Women could equally attain seats in parliament if they are equally selected by their constituency to go represent them in parliament.
