There were uncontrollable tears at Lapaz this morning as an entire family was wiped away hours into the new year. The incident according to reports sighted by CitizenOne occured at Abeka Lapaz near Ashanti Home Touch reasturant at around 3am on December 31.

The family comprising a father, mother and two kids with the younger one aged 6 months were all consumed by the inferno as there was no one to rescue them.

The report from an eye witness who spoke to Accra FM this morning suggested that the family was asleep when the fire believed to had started from the hall ignited. They reportedly woke up to meet the uncontrollable flames which had engulfed the exit doors. The family was persued into the bathroom where they hoped for rescue. Unfortunately, no one was around at the time to help.

When the neighbours later managed to douse the fire at about 5am, they found the four bodies burnt beyond recognition in the bathroom. According to them, all attempts to get Ghana National Fire Service to help fight the fire proofed futile. Two officers from the only showed up around 7am when the fire had been put off and the bodies conveyed to the hospital.

It it not clear yet what caused the fire. However some residents attempted to blame it on erratic power supply in the area last night.

While we wish the deceased peaceful rest, we admonish everyone to be cautious in this yuletide. Electrical fault is a common cause of domestic fire outbreaks. We should always remember to put off candles before we go to bed. In addition while we are to be cautious of thieves, let’s be cautious as well of fire safety when designing out buildings.
