He was once a first choice goalkeeper under British trained coach, Kim Grant at Hearts of Oak but later lost his spot.
The name is, Richmond Ayi, a tall and sturdy shot stopper roped into the Phobians on a free transfer from West Africa Football Academy in the 2018/19 season. The 24-year-old has not kept many games due to the form of current number one, Richard Attah who signed for Hearts of Oak from Elmina Sharks in 2019. Ayi, for the first time in months, made a full appearance in the Phobians’ 1-0 round 64 FA Cup glory against Accra Lions at the Carl Reindorf Park on Wednesday. He could not hide the joy of returning to the post but is not worried either for lack of playing time as the club thrives on teamwork according to him.
“It’s a great feeling because as defending champions and we starting the game in round of 64, we were determined to win. “The instructions the coach gave us, it worked to perfection,” Richmond Ayi told Africa-foot.com. “It’s a team, we are all fighting for us to win and no matter who keeps, we accept the outcome. “So it doesn’t matter me playing or not. “If I’m not playing, my support is behind the team so it doesn’t matter.” Richmond Ayi told Africa-foot.com.
Richmond Ayi was member of the glorious Hearts of Oak squad that swept the board last season – winning the league, FA Cup and an automatic Super Cup feat as a result. He was also a member of Ghana’s U-23 team that played at the third edition of the Africa U-23 tournament in Egypt where the Black Meteors placed 4th, losing their third place to South Africa. He will be looking for more games when number one, Richard Attah reports for international duty with the Black Stars ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in January.
