During a high-level government event on Thursday, December 16, President Uhuru Kenyatta had a lighthearted time hanging out with his adoptive son. Uhuru invited his adopted son Daniel Owira to a luncheon at State House where all Principal Secretaries were submitting their financial reports, which was regarded as a moment of a father grooming his son for future leadership responsibilities.

Interior PS Karanja Kibicho, who is also the chairperson of the National Development Implementation Technical Committee (NDITC), as well as other PSs, attended the meeting. They all guaranteed the President, in the presence of Uhuru’s adopted son, that they would ensure that the current projects in their various departments were completed.

Uhuru first met Owira in 2013. He was a student at Highway Secondary School at the time. A poem he recited influenced his choice to adopt him as one of his sons. The composition, titled “Otongolo,” attracted the attention of the Head of State, who was left speechless. That prompted him to enquire about the boy’s whereabouts. He learned Owira used to live in the Fuata Nyayo Slums in Nairobi’s South B.

When Uhuru met him, he changed his life forever. He promised himself that he would never be without anything and that he would become a father figure to him. He had finished high school and had paid all of his fees. “You’re one of my sons now. Make sure you hand in your report form to me at the conclusion of each term,” after taking him in, President Kenyatta stated.

Owira completed his university education at Multimedia University, where he studied journalism, cinema, and animation. He stated on campus that he has a side company selling building materials and consumables to supplement his income. Uhuru also maintained an eye on Owira’s work and life in general, just like a father would.
