The Government of Nana Addo is seeking to introduce a 1.75% tax on every electronic transaction exceeding GHC 100 from next year. This was contained in the budget and financial policy for the 2022 presented to parliament on 17th November. The proposed tax christened E levy has caused a lot of controversy in Ghana particularly in the media.

The latest twist in the discourse is from a US based Ghanaian journalist Kelvin Tailor, owner of Loudsilence TV. The host of ‘With All Due Respect’ has stated that the success or otherwise of the Electronic Transaction tax depends solely on the member of parliament for Fomena, Hon. Andrew Asiamah. He said the MP went to parliament as an independent candidate after the NPP did everything possible in the parlimentary primaries to replace him at its PC for the last election.

According to Kelvin, even Nana Akufo Addo had had to insult him in public at Fomena during a rally describing the MP as disrespectful and irresponsible. But this MP who was also removed from parliament through the machinations of the NPP caucus received the support of the people of Fomena including the chiefs, the queen mothers and the youth. Even though Nana Addo won the presidential election at Fomena, Hon. Andrew Asiamah retained his seat but as an independent candidate.

But when this MP went to parliament, he decided to associate with the NPP caucus even after NDC caucus nominated him to the position of second deputy speakership.

Kelvin maintained that, the second deputy speaker could had made a big difference recognising the support his people gave him. He said if the MP had acknowledged that he went to parliament as independent MP and distanced himself from the NPP on the e levy, there was no way NPP would have had the gut to approve it. According to him, the NPP has 137 MPs same as NDC hence his decision would had made a positive difference.

He added that all the hardships Ghanaians are going through can be attributed to the insensitivity of Hon. Andrew Asiamah because he is a big disappointment.

During the 2020 election, Nana Addo stated that he was not ready to work with any independent MP. This was after the sitting member of parliament for Fomena had chosen to contest as independent candidate following his disqualification at the primaries.
