The former PRO of PURC and current General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party, Nana Yaa Jantuah has reiterated that she does not understand why this government, under the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo is refusing to listen to Ghanaians with respect to the implementation of the 1.75% e-levy on mobile money transactions.

She made this assertion during a panel discussion on United Television’s “Adekye Nsroma” show today, December 8, 2021.

The Finance Minister, Mr Ken Ofori Atta, during the reading of the 2022 budget in Parliament last month revealed that the government intends to put a 1.75% e-levy on mobile money transactions subject to approval of the budget. He said the levy is to enable government to provide sustainable employment for the youth of the country and also help build roads and other infrastructures across the country.

This move has since generated heated arguments in the public domain with most Ghanaians expressing their unreadiness and unwillingness to pay the levy.

Speaking on the matter further, Nana Yaa Jantuah said her interactions with people she has come across including market women indicates that they are against the introduction of the e-levy and so therefore, it is important for the government to listen to the outcry and rescind it’s decision instead of ignoring Ghanaians.

”Whatever the plan of government is, all Ghanaians must always be the first priority. I do not know why e-levy has become such a big issue that the government doesn’t want to scrap it. I do not understand why the government doesn’t want to hold on and listen to Ghanaians. If nothing at all, the government must hold on and engage Ghanaians on the matter further. Almost all Ghanaians including market women I interact with everyday are against the e-levy and so I’m struggling to understand why the government doesn’t want to listen to the people” she said.

Meanwhile, the opposition through their leader in Parliament, Honorable Haruna Iddrisu has stated that the minority stand in unity against the e-levy regardless of the levels of engagement that may occur.

Has the government been right in it’s dealings with the e-levy or you think otherwise?
