The Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) has asked the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to, as a matter of urgency, reverse its directive to restrain teachers from going on vacation.
In a press statement dated 7th December 2021 and signed by the Communication Officer, Adokwei Ayikwi-Awulley, it read, “… We want to state unequivocally that we do not agree with this directive and that the Ministry should schedule that test to fall within the academic calendar.”
Moreover, the teacher union has asked GES to as reverse the decision immediately to allow all teachers at the basic level to proceed on vacation with immediate effect.
“… We are calling on GES to reverse this decision with immediate effect and allow teachers to proceed on their vacation.” Mr. Adukwei noted.
Prior to the directive from GES that all Basic schools across the country remain in school for one more week, public junior high schools were supposed to vacate today, 7th December 2021 after spending more than twenty-five continuous weeks in school.
Again, teachers in KG and primary division were also to vacate on Friday, 10th December 2021 for Christmas holidays and resume on 10th January 2022 together with junior high schools.
However, GES issued a directive yesterday that because learners in primary four will be writing the maiden National Standardized Test (NST), all teachers and pupils should remain in school, adding that teachers will be compensated for the lost week come next academic year.
The NST is scheduled to take place next week Friday, i.e. December 17th, 2022 in about 2,000 centres across the length and breadth of the country. Basic 4 learners will be assessed in two subjects, namely, English Language and Mathematics.
Meanwhile, teachers at the basic level are unhappy with the new vacation date because many had planned their activities already. Some, out of anger have even decided to go on vacation come rain or shine.
