The former Minister of Finance and Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr Kwabena Duffuor has revealed that former President Jerry John Rawlings asked him to contest the flag bearer position of the National Democratic Congress in 2018.

In an interview with GHOne TV on Monday, 6 December, 2021, Dr Duffuor told Serwa Amihere that the former President [JJ Rawlings] promised to go round the country and campaign for him [Dr Duffuor] to win the mandate of the NDC delegates and lead the party in the 2020 presidential election.

However, Dr Kwabena Duffuor said he could not contest the NDC primaries because he felt former President John Dramani Mahama deserved another chance to lead the party going into the 2020 general election.

Speaking further, the renowned economist and banker shot down speculations that he has been sent by the ruling New Patriotic Party to fustrate John Mahama’s ambition to lead the NDC in the 2024 presidential election.

In his opinion, such allegations flies in the face of the democratic principles of the NDC and should not be allowed to develop further impetus.

Touching on the electoral fortunes of the party, Dr Duffuor said the NDC must work to improve upon its performance in the Ashanti Region. In his view, the notion that the Ashantes do not like the NDC cannot be true. He touted the delivery of the party in the region as incomparable.

To prevent the incumbent NPP from retaining power in 2024, the former Finance Minister said he will work with the grassroot as well as the rank and file of the NDC to make huger inroads in the Ashanti Region in the 2024 election.

“We are going to target 40% in 2024 to stop this so-called break the eight. It [break the 8] will not happen”, he stressed.
