The government of Japan has donated 30 ultra-low temperature freezers to Ghana through UNICEF.
The gesture will boost Ghana’s fight against COVID-19 by helping to store vaccines that require storage in ultra-low temperatures.
Ambassador of Japan to Ghana, Tsutomu Himeno, presented the freezers to Ghana’s health officials at a short ceremony on Friday.
The freezers were donated through UNICEF and would be distributed to various health facilities across the country.
According to the Ministry of Health, 12 Regional Health Directorates, five Teaching Hospitals, 10 Regional Hospitals, two Quasi-Government Hospitals and one Private Hospital will benefit from the donation.
Ghana now has the capacity to receive and store more COVID-19 vaccines.
In August 2021, the government took delivery of some cold chain storage facilities.
The storage facilities include 58 ultra-low temperature vaccine freezers, 50 regular vaccine fridges, 3000 Ice pack freezers, and 300 cold boxes.
The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, had said the fridges and freezers are state-of-the-art equipment and, among other things, are able to maintain their temperature for 10 hours if power supply is interrupted.
