Sept. 21 (UPI) — Government officials said an attempted coup in Sudan failed on Tuesday, in which the military tried to take control of the state media building.

Officials said the suspects tried to seize a state-run television station in Omdurman, not far from the capital Khartoum, but were turned back.

A different military coup overthrew Sudan’s longtime dictator Omar Hassan al-Bashir in 2019, leaving the country in a perpetual state of unrest since.

“All is under control. The revolution is victorious,” Sudan Sovereign Council spokesman Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman said Tuesday, according to Africa News.

The Sovereignty Council has monitored the lengthy government transition from al-Bashir’s military rule to a civil government. Council officials did not give details about the coup attempt or how it was repelled.

Sudan’s government transition has been hindered by widespread public discontent spurred by an economic crisis.
