Sept. 10 (UPI) — Hurricane Larry is headed for the eastern part of Newfoundland in Canada on Friday and is expected to produce dangerous rains and storm surge, forecasters said.

In its 8 a.m. EDT update, the National Hurricane Center said the eye of Larry was located about 650 miles southwest of Cape Race. It had maximum sustained winds of 85 and was moving northeast at 26 mph.

Larry, presently a Category 1 hurricane, is forecast to brush the southeastern tip of Newfoundland late Friday or early Saturday.

“On the forecast track, the center of Larry will pass well southeast of Nova Scotia today, and move over southeastern Newfoundland tonight,” the NHC said in its update.

A hurricane warning was in effect for southeastern Newfoundland, Canada, from Arnold’s Cove to Jones Harbor.

After moving over Newfoundland, the storm is projected to continue moving northeast into the open Atlantic.
