Sept. 2 (UPI) — Hurricane Larry formed Thursday in the eastern Atlantic and is expected to strengthen into a major storm as it moves westward, forecasters said.

In its 5 p.m. EDT update, the National Hurricane Center said the eye of the storm was located about 765 miles west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands. It had 80 mph sustained winds and was moving west at 18 mph.

The hurricane was not near land and no warnings or watches were in effect.

Larry is on a rough path toward Bermuda, but at several dates out, it’s unclear if or when it would hit any land.

“A gradual turn towards the west-northwest with a decrease in forward speed is expected over the next few days. A turn to the northwest is then expected by early next week,” the NHC said.
