Aug. 18 (UPI) — Lizzo says she’s received “unfair” hate since the release of her song “Rumors” with Cardi B.

The 33-year-old singer and rapper spoke out on Wednesday’s episode of Good Morning America following the release of “Rumors” last week.

In an Instagram Live video Sunday, Lizzo held back tears as she described the “fatphobic,” “racist” and sexist attacks she’s experienced since releasing the single and music video for “Rumors.”

Lizzo called the hateful comments “unfair” on GMA.

“I don’t mind critiques about me — my music. I don’t even mind the fat comments, you know,” the star said. “I just feel like it’s unfair sometimes, the treatment that people like me receive.”

“People are like, ‘Don’t let ’em see you with your head down,'” she added. “My head is always up. Even when I’m upset and even when I’m crying, my head is up. But I know it’s my job as an artist to reflect the times, and this [expletive] should not fly. This shouldn’t be okay.”

Lizzo said she continues to fight marginalization and erasure as a Black woman in the music industry.

“Black women have been in this industry and innovating it forever. It is unfortunate that we are the ones who do suffer from the marginalization the most, and the erasure the most,” the singer said.

“I feel like if it weren’t for the Internet, if it weren’t for social media, I could have been erased,” she added. “But I chose to be undeniable, and I chose to be loud, and I chose to be great, and I’m still here.”

On Sunday, Lizzo also shared a message of support and self-love on Twitter.

“Loving yourself in a world that don’t love u back takes an incredible amount of self awareness & a [expletive] detector that can see through ass backwards societal standards,” she wrote. “if u managed to love yourself today I’m proud of u. If u haven’t, I’m still proud of u.”

“Rumors” is Lizzo’s first new single since her album Cuz I Love You, released in April 2019.
