Tennis fans at the Package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium Abuja yesterday were kept on the edge of their seats by the country’s best players, who are battling for cash and other laurels at the ongoing CBN Open Senior Tennis Championship.

First to show that he was in Abuja for serious business was men’s singles defending champion, Joseph Imeh, who defeated Clifford Enesoregbe 5-0 (retired) to cruise into the quarterfinals and later won another game to advance to the semifinals. Tournament’s seed three, Musa Mohammed, came from a set down to beat 2014 winner, Henry Atseye 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, while Thomas Otu also came from a set down to stop old warhorse, Shehu Lawal, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Michael Chima was also successful as he beat Peter Lawal 6-0, 6-2 to qualify for the next round.

In the women’s singles category, U.S-based Mary love Edwards overcame former champion, Edo 2020 National Sports Festival champion and tournament number nine seed, Serah Adegoke, 6-2 (retired) to reach the semifinals. Adegoke could not continue due to injury.

Top seed and women’s singles defending champion, Oyinlomo Quadri, outclassed Ronke Akingbade 6-0, 6-1 to enter the last eight.

In the wheelchair category, Alex Adewale beat Ajani Idowu 4-0, 4-1 in one of the Men’s singles matches, while Simon Promise sent Kayode Alabi Samuel packing 4-0, 4-0.

Also on the winning train was Chituru Nwaozuzu, who defeated Joy Ogun 4-0, 4-0, while Justina Ofoha was bundled out by Kafayat Omisore 4-1, 4-1.

All the quarterfinal matches were decided yesterday ahead of today’s semifinals, while the finals will hold tomorrow.
