Diego Maradona approached Paraguayan giants Cerro Porteño in a bid to take the vacant head coach job at the club, according to claims made by club president Juan Jose Zepag.

Cerro Porteño have been without a coach for two weeks since Argentine Javier Torrente parted company with the Asuncion-based club after just two games of the season. Blas Cristaldo has been in interim charge since that time; but Zapag affirmed that someone with a rather higher standing in world football had also made enquiries.

“Maradona wanted to direct Cerro Porteño. I am competely serious here, I am not joking… I cannot give details but a lot of coaches want to come here, we have received a lot of offers,” the president told 780AM on Monday.

‘El Diego’ would find himself in good company at the club; young Paraguayan-Argentine prodigy Juan Iturbe currently represents Cerro, and fellow Gauchos Juan Manuel Lucero, Jonathan Fabbro, Lautaro Formica and Roberto Nanni make up part of an eight man Argentine contingent in the first team. Zapag however affirmed that the most likely candidate was ex-River and Estudiantes coach Leo Astrada.

“We are talking to Astrada, but still negotiating the contract numbers. It is not yet confirmed”.
