City Sightseeing Cape Town is leading the way in sustainable tourism with the launch of its first fully electric commercial boat.

After more than two years in development, this pioneering vessel brings eco-friendly transportation to the forefront of the city’s tourism experience.

The sleek, modern electric boat is docked outside the One&Only Cape Town and can carry up to 32 passengers.

It will be part of the regular City Sightseeing boat schedule that offers scenic canal cruises and serves as a transport link to the Central Business District (CBD).

The electric boat offers a range of key features, including zero emissions that contribute to cleaner air and water compared to traditional fuel-powered boats. It also offers smooth performance with minimal vibration for a comfortable ride.

Skippers will guide passengers between the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

James Vos, mayoral committee member for Economic Growth and Tourism, said at the launch: “To build a future fit tourism destination, you must get the basics right and that means responsible tourism with sustainable business practices.

“They (City Sightseeing) have shown that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, and as the City of Cape Town, we want to position Cape Town as the greenest tourism destination in Africa and beyond and with the help of the private sector, we are leading the way.”

He added: “Research shows that travellers are seeking out destinations where they are implementing responsible and sustainable tourism practices, therefore it’s wonderful to see how the City Sightseeing team is leading that way with new products that are green, that are good for the planet, good for people, because that is how you position responsible tourism as a way to open up new markets and to grow the visitor economy of Cape Town.”

The introduction of this electric boat goes hand in hand with the V&A Waterfront’s other sustainability initiatives, which include the electric shuttle service known as The Green Cab, which was launched in December 2024.

Together, these services aim to lessen the carbon footprint of the precinct and encourage more eco-conscious modes of transport.

“We are thrilled to introduce this cutting-edge technology to Cape Town’s waters. Our electric boat is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and our dedication to preserving the natural beauty of our marine environment,” said Claus Tworeck, CEO of City Sightseeing South Africa.

This innovative move aligns with a larger trend among cities worldwide that focus on sustainable urban development.

The V&A’s plans include more electric services and renewable energy sources, highlighting the ongoing commitment to sustainability.
