Beatrice Annan (L) labels Afenyo-Markin's (R) style of closing remarks as haphazard style Beatrice Annan (L) labels Afenyo-Markin’s (R) style of closing remarks as haphazard style

Presidential staffer Beatrice Annan has called on Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to refine the way he delivers his closing remarks in Parliament, arguing that his current style does not reflect the standards set by those who previously occupied the role.

In a post shared on X on February 27, 2028, Beatrice Annan criticised what she described as a haphazard approach to concluding submissions on the floor of the House.

“Respectfully, my learned senior, Afenyo-Markin must learn to deliver a more refined closing remark. This haphazard style of ending submissions falls short of the standard set by his predecessors,” she wrote.

She stressed that advocacy goes beyond the substance of an argument and should be matched with composure and discipline.

‘Slogans, no action’ – Afenyo-Markin on Mahama’s first year in office

“Advocacy, even in opposition, should still carry elegance and discipline. Beautiful advocacy persuades not only through argument, but through composure and craft,” she added.

Her comments follow remarks made by Afenyo-Markin in Parliament on February 27, 2026, during deliberations after President John Dramani Mahama delivered his State of the Nation Address.

The Minority Leader was reacting to the Gold-for-Reserve Policy referenced by the President.

In his submission, Afenyo-Markin argued that former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia deserves recognition for conceptualising the Gold-for-Reserve initiative, which he said is now being implemented by the Mahama administration.

He maintained that the intellectual foundation of the policy predates the current government and should be properly acknowledged.

According to him, attempts to present the policy without crediting its originator amount to a distortion of the record.

“Mr Speaker, the Gold-for-Reserve policy—what they have failed to tell Ghanaians—is that the Bawumia they attacked is the brainchild of this policy,” Afenyo-Markin noted.

Advocacy, even in opposition, should still carry elegance and discipline. Beautiful…
