The winner of the 2023 Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament, which tees off on October 20, will win a return ticket to the United Kingdom, the organisers of the competition have said. There are also other prizes lined up for players, who excel in the competition that is returning to Ikeja Golf Club after six years at the Ikoyi Club 1938.

At a media parley to unveil the tournament in Lagos at the weekend, chairman of the Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce Golf Committee, Uwamai Igbein, disclosed that over 21 teams have signed up for the competition that offers two nights at Marriot Hotel Ikeja for the second-placed team and also two nights for the second runners up.

“There are also trophies for winning teams and sponsors that have supported the tournament over the years.

“Every participating organisation is expected to register four players, who will battle for points in the stableford competition.

“At the end of play, the points are calculated to arrive at the winner. Teams are allowed to feature both men and women, who will be engaged in individual and collective battles at the Ikeja Golf Club,” Igbein said.

Earlier, Vice chairman, Nigeria-British Golf Committee, Tayo Babalakin, had disclosed that the chamber has over 400 members in Nigeria, adding, however, that only a few of them play golf.

“It is a tournament open to any organization that wants to participate in the competition. Hopefully, in future, we will take it to other states, starting with the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“Apart from the trophies and other goodies at stake, the players use the opportunity provided by the competition to network and make new friends. Deals are closed on the golf course, just as players make lasting friendship,” he said.

Babalakin said that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will be the special guest of honour at a reception lined up as part of the closing ceremony of the competition, which main sponsor in Greenwich Merchant Bank.

He added: “The NBCC hopes to be the foremost channel of trade between Nigeria and Britain. It was established in 1977 to promote trade and investment between Nigeria and Britain and we are affiliated to the British Chamber of Commerce, which gives our members access to a network of 53 chambers across the UK and 71 other international affiliates from all sectors of the economy.

“With a membership strength of over 400 with a total net worth of about N200 billion from all sectors of the economy, we continue to pursue opportunities to add value to our members.”
