An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their attempts to add to their squad before the deadline for the January transfer window passes…

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, the Light Blues failed in an attempt to snap up Manchester City youngster Cole Palmer on loan until the end of the season.

Would Cole Palmer have been a good signing?

No

No

The report claims that the Gers were hoping that the allure of regular first-team football would be enough to tempt the Premier League side into parting ways with the England U21 international.

However, Pep Guardiola has blocked a temporary exit from England for the winger as the Spanish head coach would like the gem to remain a part of his squad in the coming months.

Scott Wright upgrade

Michael Beale could be left feeling frustrated by this failed attempt to sign Palmer from Manchester City as the young forward could have been an upgrade on current Gers attacker Scott Wright.

The Scottish winger has played 34 Premiership matches for the Light Blues since the start of last season and contributed with four goals and two assists at the top end of the pitch.

Wright has created 0.5 chances per match in 15 outings in the Scottish top-flight this term, averaging a Sofascore rating of 6.65, and these disappointing statistics indicate that the dud has left a lot to be desired with his end product.

Palmer, who was once hailed as “elegant” and a “playmaker” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, showcased his huge potential by being an outstanding player for Manchester City at youth level.

The 20-year-old plundered 22 goals and 11 assists in 29 u21 matches and was directly involved in 28 goals in 32 outings for the club’s U18 side before making the step up to Guardiola’s first-team.

Palmer, who has scored once in eight Champions League games, scored three times and provided one assist in six cup matches for City in the 2021/22 campaign and this, along with his form at youth level, indicates that the gem has the potential to make a big impact in the final third.

Therefore, the England U21 international could have come in as an upgrade on the misfiring, rarely creative, Wright as his impressive return for the Premier League champions shows that the dynamo has a knack for scoring and creating goals on a regular basis, which is why he could have been an excellent loan signing.
