In a showdown between two Premiership outfits who are seeking a much-needed boost, Motherwell will welcome St. Johnstone to Fir Park on Wednesday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Motherwell might have extended on their Scottish Cup adventure on January 21st thanks to a 2-0 victory away at Championship side Arbroath, that doesn’t cover what has been a woeful rut for Steven Hammell’s side. Last seen over the weekend putting in another toothless display as they were hit with a 1-0 loss against St. Mirren, the Steelmen are without a single victory from their last nine straight meetings against Premiership opposition. With that run stemming all the way back to October 29th, the Lanarkshire-based outfit finds just their goal difference keeping them off the foot of the Premiership table. Likewise, having to settle for a 1-1 draw against Ross County in their last showdown at Fir Park, Motherwell have continued to show a string of issues in front of their own supporters. In fact, Wednesday’s hosts have remarkably failed to record a single win on home soil since the end of August.
As for the visitors, also last seen over the weekend putting in their own toothless display as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat away at Rangers, St. Johnstone are in a similar position to Wednesday’s opponents. Continuing to free-fall down the top-flight standings, Callum Davidson’s men have shown a string of glaring issues since returning from the World Cup break. Now remarkably losing each of their last seven straight domestic appearances on the bounce, the Saints find themselves under a huge amount of scrutiny. Desperate to draw a line under their woeful run, Davidson should also have a headache over his side’s struggles in the final third. Now drawing a blank in four of their previous five meetings against top-flight opposition, we could be in for a cagey affair on Wednesday night. With four of the last five showdowns between Motherwell and St. Johnstone finishing with under 2.5 goals, we’re backing a similar outcome in midweek.
