Marcus Rashford can help Manchester United become the best team in the world again, according to boss Erik ten Hag.

United striker Rashford is out of contract at the end of next season and talks over a new deal have yet to begin between the club and his representatives. The England star has rediscovered his best form this season, scoring 17 goals for United in all competitions, including nine in his last nine games.

Rashford, 25, has already attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain and the rest of Europe’s top clubs are monitoring his contract situation following his impressive return to form. But Ten Hag has told his star forward – who will start the EFL Cup semi-final first leg at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday – he can achieve all of his ambitions at United and help the club become a major force again.

“I hope that all our players can have interest from clubs, because that means you’re doing a good job and the team is performing, so that’s what we’re aiming for,” said Ten Hag. “Then I would say this is the best place to be, because we want to construct the best team – first in England, then Europe then the world.

“This team is constructed so that his [Rashford’s] qualities come in front, so I think he knows that he is important for us if we want to get the success we want. We need him. I can’t answer [about his contract] because it’s confidential, about talks between clubs and players.

“But I think he understands Manchester United is his club first and also in this environment, this team, he’s playing his best football.

“He’s improving, he’s giving 100 per cent energy, he has a good plan and in this team, he can bring his qualities. This team can help him be in the right position to score goals, which he is good at.”

Ten Hag is still without another striker, Anthony Martial, and the United boss admitted the club must get to the bottom of the Frenchman’s recurring injuries. “He has to be more available,” Ten Hag said of Martial, 27,. “He’s really important for us, because we play our best football when he’s available.

“He has to be aware of that. If we want to be successful, we need him. I can’t see and I can’t point to what it is, because if I had, I would work on that to get it turned around.”
