Mats Wilander, Thomas Johansson to have a role at star-studded Saudi event

Swedish tennis legends Mats Wilander and Thomas Johansson will be special guests at the Diriyah Tennis Cup, the tournament organizers announced.

Wilander, a former seven-time Grand Slam champion, has been working for Eurosport as a tennis expert for the past decade and a half.

Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open champion, has coached several players since retiring from pro tennis in 2009. The Diriyah Tennis Cup organizers have a goal of growing tennis in Saudi Arabia. During this year’s tournament, there will be tennis try-outs.

Wilander and Johansson, who certainly have a very deep knowledge of the game, will be in Riyadh to give their expert tips and advice.

“The Diriyah Tennis Cup presented by Saudi Aramco is an ideal opportunity for every player to get in perfect shape for the Australian summer.

There is no better preparation than playing against the best opponents. I’m really looking forward to my first visit to Saudi Arabia, where I will also meet up with my longtime colleague Barbara Schett-Eagle and my Swedish compatriot Thomas Johansson,” Wilander said, per the tournament’s press release.

Johansson said: “It will be a great experience to visit Diriyah and watch some of the best players in this unique arena. I’m curious to see how the Saudi fans will celebrate this special event and I’m really happy to be a part of the Diriyah Tennis Cup presented by Aramco.”

The Diriyah Tennis Cup is taking place this week between 08-10 December. The tournament is set to host some of the biggest names of the game as Daniil Medvedev, Nick Kyrgios, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are among the 12-player field.

The Diriyah Tennis Cup organizers are hoping to have a great week of tennis as the ultimate goal is to continue growing tennis in the country.
