Only once since 1966, the days of Eusebio, have the Selecao qualified for the last eight of the tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Co will be the favourites to progress against the Swiss but became the latest team to suffer an upset when rotating their line-up and losing to South Korea in the final game of their group.
Switzerland only qualified for the knockouts after coming from behind to defeat Serbia on Friday night.
They are on an even longer wait for a World Cup quarter-final berth – their last appearance came in 1958.

Portugal vs Switzerland is scheduled for a 7pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday December 6, 2022.
The match will take place at Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar.

Portugal vs Switzerland team news
Diogo Dalot and Raphael Guerreiro are competing to start in Portugal’s defence with Nuno Mendes out for the rest of the World Cup.
Otavio and Danilo Pereira missed the South Korea defeat due to injury and are doubts for this game. Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes were rotated out of the team and should return.
Switzerland have enjoyed consistency in their line-up throughout the group stage but lost Nico Elvedi and Yann Sommer to illness for the win over Serbia. Both should return, if fit.
Portugal vs Switzerland prediction
Switzerland shocked France at the Euros last year and are more than capable of punishing Portugal if they fail to turn up. This one might be going all the way.
A 1-1 draw, Portugal to win on penalties.
