Tsvetana Pironkova, 35 year-old, managed to achieve great career results in 2020, when she reached the quarter-finals at the US Open after an absence of three years, first due to an injury, then to maternity. On that occasion she was the first tennis player in history to reach the quarter-finals of the New York Slam without being present in the WTA ranking, reaching it thanks to the protected ranking.
In her career she has won a WTA title, and in the Grand Slam tournaments she boasts a semifinal at Wimbledon 2010, captured thanks to a surprising victory in the quarterfinals over the then number 2 in the world Venus Williams.
As a result of this she achieved her best ranking at position 31 on the WTA rankings. She also got the quarter-finals at the 2016 French Open. At the 2016 French Open she manages to reach the quarter-finals for the first time, ousting, in order: Sara Errani, Johanna Larsson, Sloane Stephens and Agnieszka Radwańska, only to be defeated by Samantha Stosur for 4-6 6-7.

Later, her presence in the world of tennis becomes increasingly scarce, until 2017, when she gives birth to a son and she withdraws from competitions to devote herself to her family.
But this only the beginning of the story. After a pregnancy and almost three years of hiatus, Tsvetana returns to the courts at the US Open 2020 thanks to the protected ranking. Here she prevails in the first round on Ljudmila Samsonova for 6-2 6-3 and then, surprisingly, on the two-time Slam champion Garbine Muguruza for 7-5 6-3.
Later, she ousted Donna Vekić by 6-4 6-1 and Alizé Cornet with the score of 6-4 6-7 6-3. In this way, you access the quarter-finals: the first in New York and the first after more than 4 years from the last time. Here she takes on 3-seeded and six-time tournament champion Serena Williams, losing 6-4 3-6 2-6.
