Monica Puig clarifies her position on Novak Djokovic after backlash

Monica Puig has underlined that she has nothing against Novak Djokovic and that she admires the Serb and his stunning accomplishments. Earlier this week, Puig questioned how it was possible that Novak Djokovic made the ATP Finals as a Wimbledon champion but Elena Rybakina didn’t.

Even though Djokovic entered this week ranked outside the top-8 on the Race to Turin list, he made the ATP Finals via ATP’s Grand Slam qualification rule. The WTA doesn’t have that rule in place. Puig admitted that she didn’t know about the rule, but added that it was not a reason for some to be “super hostile and rude.”

“Ok people need to chill. As for my tweet yesterday, I was genuinely confused. I got clarification from many who were very helpful, however, from the others who were super hostile and rude. DO BETTER! No need to be all grumpy gills over literally nothing.

It’s the last I’m going to say on this matter because arguing with you all is exhausting. I have NOTHING against Djokovic. I’ve met him several times and I admire all his achievements. He qualified and that’s great!

I just didn’t understand the ATP and WTA rules,” Puig wrote on Twitter.

Puig was seemingly disgusted at some of the comments she received after asking how Djokovic made the ATP Finals.

“As a former WTA player I have been in countless meetings with the CEO and the board and have been in talks about the rules and trying to make the tours similar. The fact I didn’t know that the rules weren’t the same is just that!

I didn’t know. So stop coming for me. If you wanna unfollow me, that’s fine, I really don’t care. I don’t care about likes or anything for that matter, when you come for people the way you have for me, you make social media less enjoyable and more toxic.

So.. have a nice Wednesday. Enough,” Puig added.
