“What happened in Australia made me mentally empty”

It was an atypical season for Serbian champion Novak Djokovic. The twenty-one time winner of Grand Slam tournaments played a ‘part-time’ season with the tennis player who was forced to give up several major tournaments, due to his choice not to vaccinate for Covid-19.

Now Nole will take the field, after his last recent victory in Nur Sultan, to try to win the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy for the seventh time, a tournament he is very attached to. The Serbian 21-times Slam champion explained in the presentation press conference: “In this tournament I have had many successes in the course of my career.

I really enjoy it here, and it always helps to come to a tournament where you have good memories. In 2019 and 2021, the last few times I’ve been here, I’ve won and hope to continue that streak. I like the conditions even if I have to say that, after some training, I noticed that they are different.

I spoke to the tournament director and they told me that they have increased the speed of the court. Pioline told me that some players had complained about the slowness of the pitch and therefore I understand this decision.

I think this tournament is appreciated by athletes who have a great service, but in general I don’t think there is a specific formula.”

Novak Djokovic and the changes in the season

The Serbian tennis player returned to some situations that characterized his season and said: “The second part of the season was positive, what happened in Australia left me mentally empty and influenced my game in some ways.

Towards the end of the clay tour I went back to playing my game and the Wimbledon tournament was a real relief for me. Paris-Bercy? I love this tournament, I like the conditions that are there. When you win a tournament several times you always have positive feelings towards that tournament and overall I have good feelings towards next season.”
