Timea Babos accuses rival of ‘lying and cheating’ during Portoroz doubles match

Hungarian tennis player Timea Babos was definitely frustrated following her Portoroz doubles exit as she felt that Alena Fomina cheated her way into the doubles semifinal at the tournament. On Wednesday, Fomina and Ingris Gamarra Martins defeated Babos and Tamara Zidansek 6-4 2-6 10-8 to progress into the Portoroz doubles semifinal.

After the match, Babos took to Instagram, where she accused Fomina of pulling off dirty tricks during the match tie-break. According to Babos, the ball that went out touched Fomina’s racket – but the Russian remained silent.

“Just sitting on the street in Portoroz right after the doubles match we lost,” Babos said. “We had a super tiebreak 8-7 and my partner hit a backhand that touched the player’s —Fomina’s racquet, and from there, it went long.

The umpire didn’t see it and Fomina lied and cheated. Fair play doesn’t exist anymore, I guess. And also, what was the chair umpire watching? We kind of lost our job today and they just go on with no penalty. Soon, I will post the video too.

Congrats Fomina-Klotz. I hope you enjoy the victory with cheating.”

Babos and Zidansek were twice down by a break in the first set, but twice recovered as the two pairs were tied to four games apiece after the opening eight games.

But Babos and Zidansek continued to struggle on her serve as Fomina and Gamarra Martins earned their third break in the ninth game to open a 5-4 lead. In the following game, Fomina and Gamarra Martins served out for the first set.

After losing the first set, Babos and Zidansek broke Fomina and Gamarra Martins twice in the second set to force a decider. In the match tie-break, Babos and Zidansek had an 8-6 lead before Fomina and Gamarra Martins won the next four points to overturn the deficit and complete a three-set win. Babos also played in the Portoroz singles event. There, Babos suffered a first round defeat to Tara Wurth.
