Milos Raonic hailed Roger Federer for doing more for tennis than “any single individual” and congratulated him on an astonishing career. On Thursday, Federer revealed he plans to retire from tennis after the Laver Cup.

“@rogerfederer thank you for doing more for tennis than any single individual. Thanks to you competitors and fans across the world get to experience and enjoy it all over the world. Congratulations on your achievements and the people you continue to impact in and away from tennis,” Raonic tweeted.

Raonic beat Federer three times

Raonic clashed Federer 14 times.

On three occasions, Raonic was able to beat Federer. The 2016 season was the year when Raonic enjoyed his most success versus Federer. First, Raonic defeated Federer in the 2016 Brisbane final. Then, Raonic beat Federer in the 2016 Wimbledon semifinal for his first Grand Slam final.

In his retirement message, Federer thanked Raonic and everyone who was a part in his tennis journey. “I have had the immense fortune to play in front of you in over 40 different countries,” Federer said. “I have laughed and cried, felt joy and pain, and most of all I have felt incredibly alive.

Through my travels, I have met many wonderful people who will remain friends for life, who consistently took time out of their busy schedules to come watch me play and cheer me on around the globe. Thank you.” Meanwhile, 31-year-old Raonic hasn’t played for over a year now.

Raonic started the 2021 season by representing Canada at the ATP Cup and then appeared in four more tournaments in the rest of the season. His last appearance came in July 2021, when he suffered a first round defeat to Brandon Nakashima.

In late December, Raonic pulled out of the Australian Open due to a heel injury. It is unclear what Raonic plans to do next as he hasn’t made any official announcements in recent months.
