Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud for his first Grand Slam
On Sunday, Alcaraz overcame Ruud in the US Open final with a 6-4 2-6 7-6 (1) 6-3 score.
Alcaraz was playing his first Grand Slam final, while Ruud was making his second Grand Slam final appearance. After losing to Rafael Nadal earlier this year in the French Open final, Ruud once again lost a Grand Slam final to a Spaniard.
In his post-final press conference, Ruud jokingly expressed desire to avoid meeting a Spaniard in case he ever again made a Grand Slam final. Had Ruud defeated Alcaraz in the US Open final, he would have been the top-ranked player instead of the 19-year-old Spaniard.
