The playoffs are here for the 2022 Women’s World Championship, and Team USA comes in riding high. After going a perfect 4-0-0-0, the Americans are set up to play Hungary in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday.
For the most part, the United States made quick work of its opponents during group play. In the first three games, the Americans collected wins over Japan, Finland and Switzerland, outscoring the opposition by an astonishing 25-1.
Most recently, the USA took down rival Canada 5-2 to end the preliminary round and grab first place in Group A. It’s the first step for the team in avenging the gold-medal loss to Canada in 2021

Hungary had a competitive four games of group play, ultimately ending up in third place in Group B and snagging the final quarterfinal spot. The team only won a single game — a win over Germany to begin the tournament — before dropping three straight games to Czechia, Denmark and Sweden. However, thanks to an extra point gained in the shootout loss to Sweden, the team was able to finish ahead of Denmark and Germany in the standings.
While the team has played decent defensively, Hungary is struggling in the offensive zone. In four games, the club managed just seven goals and owns the worst shooting percentage so far at the tournament, coming into the quarterfinals with a 5.88 shooting percentage.
The winner of this contest advances to the semifinals, while the loser will have to play placement games to determine the final standings of the tournament.
