Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson was shot multiple times during an attempted carjacking or armed robbery Sunday in Washington, D.C., The Washington Post reported.

Robinson was transported to a local hospital after police responded. He is in stable condition with injuries that are considered non-life-threatening, according to the Post’s report. D.C. police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck told the Post that Robinson was shot “a couple times in his lower extremities.”

The shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. ET. Police reportedly have identified two suspects and recovered a firearm several blocks from where the shooting occurred.

Video from Washington television station WJLA shows Robinson’s car being towed:

The Commanders issued a statement Sunday night saying they were aware of the shooting and that team officials were with Robinson at the hospital.

Coach Ron Rivera told reporters Monday that he was watching tape of Robinson when he got the call about the shooting. The team met to discuss the situation before practice Monday morning.

“I know their hearts are heavy right now,” Rivera said of his players, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.” … But we’re very fortunate. … A lot of the news was positive.”

Robinson posted an update to his Instagram account Monday, saying: “Surgery went well! Thanks for the prayers! God is Great!”

The 23-year-old has emerged as the Commanders’ primary early down back among a running back group that includes J.D. McKissic and Antonio Gibson.

Washington selected Robinson in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the 98th overall pick. He rocketed up draft boards after a breakout senior campaign at Alabama in which he rushed for 1,343 yards (5.0 yards per carry) and 14 touchdowns. He also had 296 receiving yards and two more scores.

It is unknown how Robinson’s injuries will affect his playing status in 2022.

“When he’s ready and healthy, we’ll welcome him back,” Rivera said
